Erik Tem Hag seems to have made a brilliant move in procuring €64million defender from Eredivise Champions, Ajax Amsterdam. Manchester United’s backline has seen a boost in their defence line since the Argentine, Lisandro Martinez made his way into the starting lineup.
Erik Ten Hag’s decision to sign the Argentine was faced will criticism on the defenders ability to perform in centre-back position based on his physical stature. Lisandro Martinez stands at 5 feet and 9 inches, a height that is termed short for a defender.
Many worried that the defender would not be able to contend with strikers in the English Premier League for aerial balls which the league is known for. However, so far the Argentine has proven to be a solid rock in the backline for United.
He has proven everyone wrong with his performance in recent matches, and currently holds the record as the most successful center-back on aerial duels when compared to some of the tallest defenders in the English Premier Legaue; Virgil Van Djik, Kalidou Koulibaly, Aymeric Larpote, and Arsenal centre-back duo Gabriel Maglhaes and William Saliba.
Interestingly, the 24-year-old’s performance has win the heart of Manchester United fans as he was voted the Manchester United player of the month (August), beating Tyrell Malacia and Raphael Varane to the award.
Lisandro Martinez won consecutive Man of the Match awards against Liverpool and Southampton after a very impressive performance alongside French international, Raphael Varane.
So far, the defender has proven to be a strong opposition to strikers he has faced so far in the league, making it almost impossible for any striker in their last six fixtures to beat him in a one-on-one face-off.
Martinez has come up against the following strikers in their previous Premier League fixtures: Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy, Liverpool’s Mohammed Salah, Luiz Diaz and Arsenals’s Gabriel Jesus and none has had a good show against him.
As it stands, Manchester City’s striker Erling Haaland has been performing exceptionally in the English top flight. The Norwegian striker has proven to be a tough striker to hold down in the Premier League.
Erling Haaland has overpowered virtually all defenders head faced in the EPL so far and for all it’s worth, the Manchester City star seems to be the only player who can over power Lisandro Martinez due to his agility, foresight, top speed, strength, and height.
