Queen Elizabeth II’s death places her eldest son, now King Charles III, on the throne. He ascended to the throne because he was the first in the royal line of succession, a snaking line that runs through the generations of this thousand-year-old institution’s family tree.
Prince William has succeeded Charles as heir to the throne, and he is followed by his three children. Children make up more than half of the top two dozen in the succession line.
The succession rules vary and can be strict at times. According to the Royal Family‘s website (which was temporarily taken down following the queen’s death), no Roman Catholic can succeed to the throne. Those who married Roman Catholics were also disqualified until recently.
