Three Chelsea Players Who Could See a Change of Roles Under New Manager Graham Potter

Chelsea appoint Brighton’s Graham Potter as new head coach, replacing the sacked Thomas Tuchel on a five-year contract.

The Blues spent a record €296 million in the summer on new players such as Wesley Fofana, Raheem Sterling and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but the results have failed to materialise.

They have lost three of their last five games in all competitions and only three shots on goal in Tuesday’s 1-0 loss to Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League – the last game of Tuchel’s reign.

Owner Todd Boehly was quick to call Potter the club’s top target, ahead of Mauricio Pochettino and Zinedine Zidane.

Potter told the club’s website after his appointment: ”I am extremely proud and excited to represent Chelsea FC, this fantastic football club.

”I am very much looking forward to working with Chelsea’s new ownership team and I am looking forward to meeting and working with an exciting group of players and developing a team and a culture that our incredible fans can be proud of.”

Five Chelsea players who may change roles under Graham Potter:

One of the key qualities Graham Potter looks for in players is versatility; he likes to be flexible in the way he sets up players depending on the opposition.

Solly March, Leandro Trossard and Pascal Gross were used in several different positions during Potter’s time at Brighton.

A number of Chelsea’s first team players also have experience in multiple positions or can play in other places.

In particular, Wesley Fofana, who signed for £80 million from Leicester City last summer, can play in midfield.

Although Chelsea have many options in midfield, none of them is a traditional “number 6”.

Fofana came through the Saint-Etienne academy as a central outfielder and could be used in a similar way to how Potter used Ben White at the Amex Stadium two seasons ago.

Then the Chelsea manager may decide to use Christian Pulisic as a wing-back, as he did with Trossard at Brighton.

The Blues have plenty of space on the left wing with Ben Chilwell and Marco Cucurella, but Pulisic could offer something different.

The US international has yet to earn a place in the starting line-up at Stamford Bridge, but this could be his best chance.

Raheem Sterling could be given a new role in a more advanced position under Potter.

The 27-year-old is used to playing on both flanks, but could be well suited to playing alongside or behind a striker – probably Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Potter often uses a 3-5-2 formation without wing-backs, so Sterling could be asked to do what he sometimes did for England under Harry Kane.
