After the 2023 general election, no political party may run a same-faith ticket for president and vice president of Nigeria. The Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is working to alter section 84 of the 2022 Electoral Act to prevent this.
At a media briefing today, September 4, Senator Smart Adeyemi (APC Kogi West), in a draft copy of a bill to that effect, claimed that the Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has caused a stir in the political system, demanding action.
According to new subsection 3 of Section 84 of the Principal Act, no political party shall nominate candidates of the same faith as the Presidential candidate and Vice Presidential candidate after the 2023 election.
When this is resolved, it will act as a warning against such oversights in the future because any additional occurrences will be seen as silent policies that could threaten the foundations of the country.
