Gunmen Attack Labour Party Meeting In Enugu

Ahead of the 2023 general elections, gunmen suspected to be political thugs loyal to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have reportedly attacked members of the Labour Party during their meetings in Enugu State.

SaharaReporters gathered that the attacked happened on Sunday during Ward meetings at Aninri and Awgu local government areas of the state.

Sources told SaharaReporters that whil nobody was killed in the attack, some people were injured while their cars, chairs and canopies were vandalised.

The LP governorship candidate, Hon Chijioke Edeoga, confirmed the attack on the party members.

Edeoga said he received a report of gunmen suspected to be political thugs attacking their members during their monthly meetings at Aninri ward and Awgu ward 1, and destroyed chairs, cars, canopy and wounded some people.

He said, “Nobody was killed but some people were wounded and cars vandalised.

“I was told that the gunmen chased away our members and shot indiscriminately, causing panic. Chairs and canopies were destroyed, cars of members packed were also vandalised.”

Meanwhile, efforts to get the reaction of the state police command were unsuccessful as the Command’s spokesman, Daniel Ndukwe, could not take his calls or respond to text message.

FG Suspends Proposed Telecoms Tax

The Federal Government has suspended the proposed excise duty on telecommunication services.

The suspension was announced by the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, on Monday during the inaugural meeting of the Presidential Committee on Excise Duty for the Digital Economy Sector in Abuja.

According to the minister, the telecommunications sector is already overburdened by excessive and multiple taxation.

The Federal Government through the Budget Office of the Federation had earlier revealed that it would begin the implementation of its proposed excise duties on telecommunication services and beverages in 2023.

However, Pantami has maintained that he is against the implementation of this tax, which would increase the cost of telecommunication services for Nigerians.

United, secure, productive Nigeria possible – Peter Obi

Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi has said achieving a united, secure and productive Nigeria is possible.

Obi had been on a visit to some countries seeking support for his presidential candidacy.

He disclosed this in a message via his verified Twitter handle while thanking Frankfurt, Rome, Toronto and other countries he visited.

He wrote: “I am profoundly grateful to my fellow Nigerians whom I met and interacted with in Frankfurt, Rome, Toronto, Los Angeles, Houston, Charlotte, Washington D.C, Atlanta and New York. Your warmth and collective graciousness has been elating; and your passion for rescuing Nigeria, inspiring.

“Your best wishes and prayers continue to uplift me. As I return home after eight days on the road, I do so with a renewed sense of purpose and conviction.

“My takeaway is that a united, secure and productive Nigeria, which is our collective dream is possible. It is a dream we intend to bring to actualization. Thank you all for the quality time; expressed confidence and suggestions. Thank you for believing that a new Nigeria is possible”.

Buhari’s request to visit Doha rejected; Qatari leader asks Nigerian president to reapply in 2023

Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of the State of Qatar, has rejected a proposed visit to the country by President Muhammadu Buhari this month, asking Mr Buhari to apply in 2023.

On Monday, Sahara Reporters reported that it had obtained a document showing that Mr Buhari’s proposed visit dates were rejected by the Qatari government last month.

“The Embassy of the State of Qatar in Abuja presents its compliments to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Regions Department) and with reference to the latter’s Note M 403/2022 dated 12/08/2022 informing that H.E Muhammadu Buhari, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has accepted to visit Qatar on 11-12 September 2022 on invitation of H.H Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, Emir of the State of Qatar,” the note is quoted as saying. “Has the honour to communicate that the proposed dates for the visit are not suitable and kindly request the Nigerian side to propose other dates for the visit during the first quarter of the year 2023.”

The report cited an unnamed presidential source who alleged that the State Chief of Protocol (SCOP), Ambassador Lawal Abdullahi Kazaure and his team “didn’t follow the usual diplomatic channel to accept and propose alternative dates.”

“After over 3 months without a word, the State House wrote directly to the Qatar Embassy in Abuja to inform them that President Buhari wants to visit from 11-12 September 2022. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs was not involved. Our Embassy in Doha, capital of Qatar was not also consulted,” the report said.

Efforts to reach the presidency for comments proved abortive as phone calls and messages made to Garba Shehu, Mr Buhari’s aide, were unanswered at the time of filing.
