The Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has said investment education is one of the tools that can end the poverty ravaging the country.

The governor stated this via Zoom during the two-day 2022 Lagos State Education summit held on Victoria Island.

Sanwo-Olu disclosed that his administration had intervened in over 1,000 education projects in the last three and a half years, saying education should be a major cardinal of any government.

He said, “Education is not just a pillar in one of our THEMES agenda, it is one of the major dividends of democracy and the cardinal objectives of any government. We see education as one of the tools that can end poverty in our system and we see it as one of the areas that can be fixed for generations to come.”

Former Deputy National Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party, Bode George, has advocated independent candidates for electives posts in Nigeria, saying the phenomenon will end the era of godfatherism.

George spoke alongside Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, during the commissioning of Omerelu Internal roads in the Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers.

The PDP chieftain again reiterated the need for the restructuring of the country along political and fiscal lines.

“If this country is restructured equitably, the current revenue-sharing formula which the Federal Government collects 52.6%…will stop.

“If this country is restructured poltically, responsible politicking through independent candidate will be introduced into our politics which will automatically knock out godfatherism from our politics,” he said.

“To have an egalitarian society, restructuring is the answer, if we want Nigeria to survive as a nation.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has carpeted the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) for extending its strike indefinitely.

The students’ body accused the university teachers of embarking on a mission to crumple the nation’s university education system and systematically promote private universities where many of them have their children.

In a statement yesterday, NANS President Adedayo Sunday Asefon said: “We have taken the time to review the decision of ASUU to declare an indefinite strike after the ongoing six-month strike. We consider the decision not only unpatriotic, unnecessary but wicked and definitely not in the interest of our nation or the tertiary education system in Nigeria.

“Such a decision was easy for ASUU because many of their leaders do not have their wards in public universities and still keep employment at various private universities around the country. As such, they are not affected by their attempt to collapse the sector for their selfish and inconsiderate gains.
