A chieftain of the Labour Party, Mr Valentine Ozigbo, has said the party’s leadership is making plans to woo the Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, and other aggrieved members of the Peoples Democratic Party and All Progressives Congress leaders to support the party’s presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, ahead of the 2023 general election.

Ozigbo, who was the governorship candidate of the PDP in the Anambra State governorship election, stressed that the LP would be ready to enter into an alliance with Wike, and some other willing state governors to gain their support for Obi’s presidential bid in their respective states.

A former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Ekiti State, Owoseni Ajayi, has dismissed insinuations that the 2023 general elections will be keenly contested among three leading presidential candidates.

Ajayi, a chieftain of the Social Democratic Party in the state, maintained that the battle for the presidency was between the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, and his counterpart in the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

He said, “Although the three leading presidential candidates are Asiwaju Bola Tinubu of All Progressives Congress, Atiku Abubakar of Peoples Democratic Party and Peter Obi of Labour Party, the battle is between Tinubu and Atiku.”

Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, lashed out yesterday at the Department of State Services (DSS) for what he branded the persecution of his associate, Malam Tukur Mamu.

Mamu was arrested in Cairo, Egypt on Tuesday at the prompting of the DSS, and deported to Nigeria immediately.

The organisation said subsequently that security agencies executed valid search warrants on Mamu’s residence and office during which incriminating materials, including military accoutrements and large amounts in different currencies and denominations as well as financial transaction instruments, were recovered.

But Gumi, in his first reaction to the development, said it was persecution akin to the ordeal of the late Sardauna of Sokoto Sir Ahmadu Bello and former Head of State, General Murtala Muhammed.
