The Lagos State Government has directed all schools to begin the 2022/2023 academic year on September 5, 2022.

A statement issued by the Director-General, Office of Education Quality Assurance of the state, Abiola Seriki-Ayeni, on Saturday and made available to The PUNCH stated this.

It noted that this was as approved by the Commissioner for Education in the state, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo.

The statement partly read, “All schools below tertiary level in Lagos State are mandated to resume for First Term on Monday September 5, 2022 as stated in the 2022/2023 Harmonised Academic Calendar as approved by the Honourable Commissioner for Education Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo.

NANS Get New President

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has elected Comrade Umar Barambu from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria as its new President.

Barambu, a student of Economics and Development Studies got 292 votes to defeat his closest rival, Umar Farouk Lawan who scored only 8 votes.

The election was held at the old parade ground, Abuja.

Barambu is a former students’ union president, joint campus committee chairman and Zone A cordinator.

He is to succeed Asefon Sunday Dayo, the outgoing NANS President.

The association also elected former NANS JCC Ondo chairman, Akinteye Babatunde Afeez as its Vice President, External Affairs.

Akinteye polled 245 votes to defeat his only rival, Dan Fodio who polled 43 votes.

I remain ADC presidential candidate — Kachikwu

The Presidential Candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Dumebi Kachikwu, has said that he remains the candidate of the party for the 2023 election despite his purported suspension by the former National Working Committee of the party headed by Ralph Nwosu.

Kachikwu, who debunked news of his suspension at a news conference in Abuja on Saturday, stated that neither Nwosu nor the defunct National Working Committee chaired by him has the power to suspend him having elapsed on August 28, 2022.

The ADC presidential candidate, who was flanked by the Chairman and Chairmen of state chapters of the party, Mr. Temitope Ogga from Kogi State and his Edo State counterpart, Mr. Kennedy Odion, described his claimed suspension by an illegal NWC as a joke since he had not done anything to warrant suspension having won the election to fly the party’s ticket as its flagbearer.

Fuel Tanker Fire Razes 10 Buildings In Ogun

Ten buildings have been consumed by fire after a tanker laden with 45, 000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit crashed, spilling its content at Ifo in Ogun State.

A statement issued on Saturday in Lagos by Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, Zonal Coordinator, South West, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), said the incident occurred at about 7.00 am on Olambe Matogun Road, Ifo.

“Though, no life was lost or any injuries sustained, about 10 buildings were consumed in the incident.

“The situation was mitigated with most of the content spilling into the canal close to the scene.

“This saved the community from a serious incident that could have affected more people,” Farinloye said.
