Turkish president Erdogan says Europe reaping what it sowed on energy crisis

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday that Russia is reducing natural gas exports to Europe in response to sanctions and that Europe is “reaping what it sowed.”

Fears in Europe have grown over a possibly harsh winter after Russia stated that it will keep its main gas pipeline to Germany closed.

Russia has suspended Nord Stream 1 pipeline flows indefinitely and has curtailed or shut down supply of three of its largest westward gas pipelines since its invasion of Ukraine began on February 24. Oil supplies have been rerouted eastward as well.

“Europe is reaping what it sowed,” Erdogan said to reporters in Ankara on Tuesday, adding that sanctions compelled Putin to react with energy supplies.

“Putin is employing all available methods and weapons, the most significant of which is natural gas. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, a similar situation is unfolding across Europe, “Erdogan stated.

This winter, I believe Europe will face major challenges. “We don’t have such an issue,” he continued.

Turkey, a NATO member, has attempted to find a balance between Moscow and Kiev by criticizing Russia’s incursion and delivering armaments to Ukraine while resisting Western sanctions and continuing commerce, tourism, and investment with Russia.

The Turkish government, which shares a Black Sea border with both Russia and Ukraine, has warned that imposing sanctions on Russia would have harmed its already stressed economy and that it is instead focusing on mediation efforts.

Moscow blames the halt in gas flow via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline on disruptions in equipment maintenance induced by Western sanctions. That is ridiculous, European nations say, accusing Russia of weaponizing energy supplies in revenge for Western sanctions placed on Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine.
