Ukraine urges EU to implement new Russia sanctions package by end-September

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dimitro Kuleba has urged the European Union to implement a new package of sanctions against Russia by the end of September in response to its invasion of Ukraine.

The package, the EU‘s eighth since the start of the conflict in Eastern Europe, is being discussed by EU member states “after a summer break”, Kuleba said.

“I have stressed to my colleagues that we expect this package in September and we believe that it should be approved”, said the Ukrainian diplomat, who also acknowledged that he had expressed Kiev’s intentions for this new round of measures.

“I have told them what sanctions we expect them to take and, in principle, talks are starting now after a summer break in the EU”, added Kuleba, who said that “there is no doubt that there will be an eighth package”, according to the Ukrinform news agency.

In addition to this new batch of sanctions, Brussels announced at the end of August the suspension of the visa facilitation agreement with Russia, which will mean a significant reduction in the number of permits for Russian citizens to enter the EU.

In the same vein, the European Commission on Tuesday launched a proposal that will make visas more expensive – they will cost 80 euros, 45 euros more than they do now – and take longer to obtain, with up to 45 days to receive documentation.
