Antonio Rudiger’s agent has made an open admission that the defender wanted to stay at the club at the end of last season but that the club didn’t make enough effort to keep the player. Unfortunately for Chelsea, they lost the defender on a free transfer to last season’s Champions League winners Real Madrid. On the other hand, Chelsea replaced Rudiger with Napoli Center-back Kalidou Koulibaly. Without a doubt, Kalidou Koulibaly is a top addition to Chelsea but the fact remains that he no longer has what it takes to fill the void left by Germany International.
Since Chelsea allowed Rudiger to leave the club there have been no conditions in their back three. Thiago Silva is still doing what he knows how to do best, but the void left by Rudiger keeps showing week in and week out. Koulibaly is often caught out of position at times, this has at times caused a misbalance in the defensive unit of the team.
Kalidou Koulibaly does not possess the type of passing ability or accuracy that Rudiger possesses. Rudiger can play a great number of progressive passes that will open goal-scoring opportunities for Chelsea, Kalidou is trying his best but he cannot play those passes like the current Real Madrid player would have played them.
Rudiger has more pace than Koulibaly. One of the things that a defender should possess in their arsenal in a back three defensive formation is the ability to recover when your wing-backs have been beaten. Rudiger’s speed was pivotal for Chelsea two seasons ago when they won the UEFA champions league. The defender’s pace allows him to cover areas that Chelsea’s opponents would have exploited.
Rudiger offers more goal-scoring threats than Koulibaly. The defender can shoot accurately with his leg and he is very comfortable in the air too.
Chelsea Football Club have missed the impact of Rudiger in games when he was with them, but they will hope that Koulibaly can replicate the form of the German international
