Why the referee and VAR were wrong to have disallowed Arsenal’s opening goal against Man United

Mikel Arteta led Arsenal team were in action yesterday in their 6th league game of the new English Premier League season against Manchester United away from home at the Old Trafford.

Arsenal going into the game were the only team left in the competition with a 100% perfect winning record and were hoping to keep the winning streaks going before it was distorted by the Red Devils, who have also got their campaign back on track with a four-game winning run after their first two league openers ended in a disappointing defeat.

The game in the first place was a thrilling one which was keenly contested with an all-round entertaining displays in the whole 90 minutes duration of the game.

Manchester United in the game were able to outsmart the Mikel Arteta’s side who have been enjoying a blistering run of form since the campaign began as they suffered their first defeat of the season with a three goals to one scoreline at full time.

A goal form debutant Antony Dos Santos and a brace from Marcus Rashford gave the host the three goals while the visitor had their only goal from Bukayo Saka thereby making it three points separating the two sides on the table.

However, there was a side attraction in the game as Arsenal in the 12th minute initially took the lead after they opened the scoring sheet with a goal from Gabriel Martinelli which was disallowed after referee and VAR review in respect to the build up.

This could be seen as another controversial decision taken as it has been the case in recent time about the clamouring and agitations on the poor officiating in the competition.

As seen in the build up, Martin Odegaard who made the pass for Gabriel Martinelli was spotted to have had contact with Christian Eriksen before gaining advantage to the ball.

As much as there was contact from behind by the Arsenal’s captain, the fact remained that the contact was minimal and very soft noting that Christian Eriksen went down at the slightest opportunity to give the ball away to the opponent as this shouldn’t have stand against disallowing the ball which could have changed the whole scenario should the visitor have taken the lead at that moment.
