MUN 0 VS 1 RSO: Three talking points as controversial referee decision favours Real Sociedad

[ad_1]

Erik ten Hag and his men locked horns with Spanish side Real Sociedad on match day one in the EUROPA League.

The last time both teams faced each other the match ended in a goalless draw.

Erik lined his men up in a 4-3-3 formation while Real Sociedad started the game in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

The first 45 minutes ended in a goalless draw.

B. Mendez gave Real Sociedad the lead through a penalty in the 59th minute.

Three talking points in the match are:

1. POOR CRISTIANO RONALDO.

Before tonight’s game, the Portuguese International had not started any game for Erik ten Hag’s side this season but was included in the starting lineup as United faced Real Sociedad in their opening game of the Europa League campaign. The 37-year-old forward was far from his best as he failed to play a single first-half shot or create any danger to Real Sociedad’s defense.

2. POOR CASEMIRO

The Brazilian midfielder had not started any of United’s games since making a switch from Real Madrid this summer but was included in tonight’s match. Casemiro had a poor outing as he failed to control the midfield or connect well with his teammates. He was sluggish without the ball and lost possession on several occasions in the game.

3. CONTROVERSIAL REFEREE’S DECISION

VAR and referee’s decisions have continued to be inconsistent in modern days football. United conceded a penalty in the 59th minute but the penalty should not have stood because the Argentine defender’s arm was not widely stretched out.
