Oscar Awards 2023 In Retrospect: Netflix And A24 Dominate At 95th Academy Awards With Surprise Wins And Historic Moments.
By Ebor Cletus Ralph Jr.
The 95th Academy Awards ceremony was a night full of surprises and memorable moments. The ceremony was held on Sunday, March 12, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles. The host of the night was comedian and actor, Keegan-Michael Key, who kicked off the night with an energetic and entertaining opening monologue.
One of the biggest stories of the night was the success of A24 and Netflix. Everything Everywhere All at Once, which was distributed by A24, won seven awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay for the Daniels (Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert). The film also won Best Actress for Michelle Yeoh, Best Supporting Actor for Ke Huy Quan, and Best Supporting Actress for Jamie Lee Curtis. This makes it the most awarded film of the night.
All Quiet on the Western Front, which was distributed by Netflix, won four awards, including Best International Feature, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, and Best Production Design. Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, which was also distributed by Netflix, won Best Animated Feature, marking the streaming giant’s first win in that category.
There were some historical wins as well. Ke Huy Quan became the second-ever Asian actor to win Best Supporting Actor, while Michelle Yeoh became the first-ever Asian actress to win Best Actress. Additionally, all of the acting awards went to first-time nominees.
Unfortunately, not all films got to share in the success of the night. Many films only won one award, such as Avatar: The Way of Water, Top Gun: Maverick, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Women Talking, and RRR. Elvis, Tár, The Banshees of Inisherin, Babylon, and The Fabelmans all went home empty-handed.
The 2023 Oscars will go down in history as a night of surprises, first-time wins, and a big night for A24 and Netflix. We will have to wait and see what the 96th Academy Awards have in store for us.
