The Banyana Banyana of South Africa have qualified for the final of the AWCON, which is taking place in Morocco.
In the first semi-final on Monday, South Africa overcame the Copper Queens of Zambia in a thrilling 1-0 victory to advance.
The game was about to enter overtime after a goalless first 90 minutes until South Africa shocked their opponents with the game-winning goal after six minutes of added time.
Following extensive discussion with the Video Assistant Referee, the side was given a penalty for a foul on one of its players (VAR).
Linda Motlhalo went up and made the penalty kick to advance the South Africans to the AWCON championship game.
Banyana Banyana, who lost 4-3 to the Super Falcons of Nigeria at the 2018 edition, are now making it to the final for the second time in a row.
They will now face the winners of the other semifinal tie between Nigeria’s Super Falcons and hosts Morocco.
Morocco and Nigeria will be meeting later on Monday.
Meanwhile, all semi-finalists have already automatically qualified for the 2023 FIFA Women‘s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
