Sheikh Muktar Robow Abuu Mansuur, a co-founder of the terrorist group Al-Shabaab, was nominated as the nation’s Minister of Religion Affairs on Tuesday by Somalia’s Prime Minister, Hamza Abdi Barre.
In 2013, Robow left the terrorist organisation with ties to al-Qaeda due to ideological disagreements.
Before splitting with the group and proclaiming support for the government in 2017, he was listed as a wanted man by the US with a $5 million bounty on his head.
After Robow was designated “politically powerful” and placed under house arrest in 2018, the government and him later had a falling out.
Early this year, the government freed him and the state pardoned him.
