2023: I Doubt If INEC Can Guarantee Credible Elections – Prof Chidi Odinkalu

[ad_1]

Former National Human Rights Commission chairman Prof. Chidi Odinkalu is concerned that INEC won’t be able to hold credible elections in 2023.

Odinkalu made the remark during an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today when talking about the elections in 2023 and the challenges Nigeria faces.

The former director of the NHRC claims that INEC is unable to transport election workers safely to different parts of the country due to security concerns.

He said, “I’m sorry to say this, but I don’t think the current INEC is safeguarding Nigerians by being honest.” I have severe doubts about the present INEC’s ability to hold fair elections under the current regime. I regret having to say that, but allow me to clarify.

“I am Exhibit No. 1 now that you have heard President Buhari say that he will secure the credibility of the upcoming elections next year. According to Nigerian law, the president is not allowed to support any election that has nothing to do with his official obligations.

“The president’s assertion that he can guarantee the integrity of the elections the following year is one sign that INEC is not autonomous. In addition, INEC says nothing about how the president effectively usurped its jurisdiction. According to Nigerian law, INEC is the only entity that has the authority or responsibility to guarantee elections.

“Second, INEC cannot currently securely deploy poll workers in many Nigerian regions. Although it is not necessary, I may mention a few websites. The governor of Kaduna State claimed in a letter to the president that Ansaru, for instance, was establishing a parallel government there and collecting taxes from the public.
