Queen Elizabeth: Don’t rename UNN, Ohanaeze tells Presidency

[ad_1]

Socio-cultural umbrella organization Igbo Ohanaeze has called on the presidency to reject a proposal to rename Nsukka University of Nigeria to Queen Elizabeth University of Nigeria.

The group said this decision could be the best for Aso Rock, Abuja or other parts of the north. It was then that he pointed out that former Young Progressive Party presidential candidate Adamu Garba should apologize to Ndigbo for such an unhistorical remark.

Garba on Friday advised the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (Retired), to immortalize Queen Elizabeth, who died on Thursday at the age of 96, by renaming the UNN in her honor.

But in response, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, led by Chidi Ibeh, said in a statement signed by its secretary general, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, that such a remark was likely to foment conflict in the country. According to the statement, “The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide warned the federal government to rename its most important and prestigious university, Nsukka University of Nigeria, in honor of the late British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II.”

“The university has left a legacy in South East Nigeria and it should be known to newcomers like former APC Presidential hopeful Adamu Garba that Federal Medical Center Umuahia, Abia State , was renamed in honor of the late British monarch and as Queen Elizabeth Umuahia Medical Centre.” is well known, but Nigerians have yet to see the remains of the late Queen Elizabeth in Northern Nigeria. It is fitting that the North should receive its fair share of the Queen’s inheritance.

Ndigbo was instrumental in hosting the late Queen Elizabeth II in 1956 when Nigeria hosted the late Queen. It has not forgotten our memories of helping a wealthy Igbo business tycoon, Sir Louis Odumegwu Ojukwu, when Queen Elizabeth II visited Nigeria in 1956.

The Nigerian government at the time could not afford a Rolls-Royce, so they approached and borrowed this Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith LWB from Sir Louis Odumegwu Ojukwu, father of Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu, the legendary Igbo icon. If the federal government and presidency are to immortalize the late Queen Elizabeth II, they must look to the Queen’s role in granting political freedom and independence to Nigeria on October 1, 1960. And the most appropriate place to show gratitude to Groot Britain should be in Aso Rock (the Citadel of Power).

So we ask the federal government to rename the presidential residence of Aso Rock in honor of Queen Elizabeth II. This is the best place to honor Queen Elizabeth II, not Nsukka University of Nigeria, as it is a fire hazard to destroy the symbol of Nigeria’s Learning Citadel. We urge Adamu Garba to apologize to Ndigbo for this non-historical comment.”
