Barbie Takes Center Stage at Nigerian Box Office

Greta Gerwig's Colorful Creation Captivates Audiences with ₦66 Million in 1st Week

Barbie, the latest movie directed by Greta Gerwig and distributed by Warner Bros, had a fantastic start in Nigerian cinemas this summer. Despite its massive publicity and online trends, it couldn’t surpass Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One’s opening week record, which still holds the top spot with ₦78 million.

However, Barbie’s cinematic journey in the colorful world of Barbie land, where Barbie and Ken experience life among humans, managed to captivate audiences and rake in an impressive ₦66 million in its first week of release. It currently holds the number one position at the domestic box office in Nigerian cinemas and is being shown in 66 locations across the country.

On the Nollywood front, Òrìṣà, the Yoruba epic, claimed the third spot in the box office chart with ticket sales of ₦40 million, making it the biggest Nollywood opening in 2023 so far. Quite an achievement, especially considering it was released alongside two heavyweight foreign titles.

Meanwhile, Tom Cruise’s latest spy thriller, Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One, kept a strong hold on the second spot with an additional ₦50 million in its second week.

Oppenheimer had a bit of a struggle, securing a fourth-place finish on the chart with an opening week gross of ₦26 million. Nonetheless, this summer’s movie lineup promises to keep audiences entertained with exciting and diverse offerings.
