Borrell calls for EU-27 unity against “fascist regime” in Russia

The European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, on Monday called on the EU-27 to stand united against Russia’s “fascist regime” in the midst of the energy price hike, assuring that European values will “falter” if the interests of member states clash in the response to Moscow, reports Reuters.

“We have to be united and we have to make it visible,” said the head of European diplomacy in a remote speech at the Interparliamentary Conference in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic.

Borrell warned that it would be a “problem” to present different interests at member state level. “Values will be shaken when we clash with each other over interests,” he warned.

In this sense, he called for a break in the energy dependence that exists with Russia, after describing it as a “strategic error” to have left the supply of gas to Europe in Moscow’s hands. “Now it is using it as a weapon”, he lamented, insisting that it will be “painful” but it is a “duty” to make progress in the transition to renewable energies.

The High Representative’s statements come in the midst of a debate within the EU over the escalation of energy prices and when European sanctions are being called into question in member states such as Hungary and Italy.

THE HIGH REPRESENTATIVE HAS CALLED ON THE EU TO SEND ARMS TO THE “FASCIST RUSSIAN REGIME”:

In the context of the war in Ukraine, Borrell has defended sending arms, assuring that in the context of military aggression there are no “magic solutions” to put an end to the conflict, but has indicated that one of the options is to help the Ukrainian army, in addition to using diplomacy or applying sanctions to Russia.

“We do not have a concrete plan to defeat the fascist Russian regime, but my task is more modest and is to help Ukraine in a united way and to continue discussions with international actors to implement the sanctions adopted,” Borrell said.

In a more general reflection, the head of EU diplomacy argued the need for a more militarily capable EU and to jointly address the increase in defence spending.

“Nobody wants to spend money on defence, but at the moment Europe has to do more to defend itself, develop its industry and improve its military capacity in a coordinated way”, he pointed out. He pointed out that if the EU-27 do not develop militarily in a coordinated way, this will create a disparity and the goal of having a European force will not be achieved.
