Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom has flagged off the first round of campaign on Outbreak Response Vaccination to contain the spread of Circulating Virant Polio Virus (Cvpv) detected in some states through environmental surveillance, including neighbouring Taraba state.
Governor Ortom called on health workers in the State to brace up and meet with the challenges of the campaign to ensure targeted eligible children from birth to 59months are fully vaccinated with the Novel Oral Polio Vaccine (nopv) approved by Energency Operation Center, EOC, to increase community health immunity and sustain the gains already recorded.
Represented by his Health Commissioner, Dr Joseph Ngbea , Governor Ortom enjoined traditional rulers, religious leaders,parents and stakeholders to involve by ensuring that children from 0 – 59 months or 0 – 5 years are vaccinated with the Novel Oral Polio Vaccine, NOPV.
Speaking in his capacity of Honourable Commissioner, Dr Ngbea disclosed that as deliberate policy to manage emergencies, the State Ministry of Health has established an Emergency Fund Account to facilitate immediate response to disease outbreaks while waiting for higher interventions.
Dr Ngbea informed that Government is currently undertaking massive renovation of Benue State University Teaching Hospital, BSUTH, Makurdi, General hospitals Gboko, Katsina-Ala, Okpoga and assured that Primary Health Care Centres will soon take their turn.
Executive Secretary, Primary Health Care Board, Chief Mrs Grace Ashi Wende, HRH , Mue Ter Gwer, Dominic Akpe amongst others delivered goodwill messages after which, the representative of the Governor administered the Vaccine on children. The flag off ceremony was conducted at Family Support Clinic, Kwarafa Quaters, Makurdi.
