Lack of trust, Nigeria’s real problem – Cleric

The General Overseer of Foursquare Gospel Church, Rev Sam Aboyeji, has described lack of trust as the major problem facing the country.

Aboyeji spoke at a press conference heralding the 9th annual public lecture and the 67th national convention of the church with the theme “A Nation at War against Itself: The Way Forward,” held at its national headquarters in Lagos on Thursday.

According to him, the outcry over the Muslim-Muslim ticket is fuelled by the general lack of trust between the citizens and their leaders.

He said, “Whatever we are facing in the nation today, all of us are facing it. It appears that the promotion of sectional interests is prevailing.

“It’s not just about Muslim-Muslim ticket. What of the tension between the South and the North? People are just playing up the Muslim-Muslim ticket.

“There is a general lack of trust, and I think that is the real problem. Several interests have been jeopardised in terms of appointments and policies.

“We have the Federal Character Commission, but I wonder if it is still operating. The people who put that body in place already knew our diversity. They knew there must be stability, but I don’t think that commission is functional again. It’s like they have closed shop because we don’t see it reflecting anywhere. So, as a nation, we need to understand that we are diverse and all interests must be taken care of so that there can be peace and progress.”

Aboyeji urged the Federal Government to put proper laws in place to check the incessant strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

Prof. Akin Oyebode is expected to speak at the lecture, which will be chaired by Prof. Bolaji Akinyemi.
