As the 2023 presidential election draws closer, it will interest you to note that the uproar over the Muslim/Muslim presidential ticket lingers on in the camp of the All Progressives Congress. It should be recalled that after emerging as the presidential candidate of the APC in June, about seven weeks ago, Bola Tinubu, announced Kashim Shettima, a former governor of Borno State as his running mate. But the choice of the Muslim-Muslim ticket generated a series of reactions and counter-reactions across the country.

With few weeks into the campaign season, the All Progressives Congress, APC is yet to set up its campaign council. There is anxiety in their camp that the composition of it is presidential ticket could spell for them ahead of the 2023 presidential election.

As a result of the Muslim-Muslim ticket, some members of the party defected to other parties while some key members, including Babachir Lawal, former SGF, and Yakubu Dogara, former Speaker of the House of Representatives launched a nationwide campaign against the APC on the ticket. It will interest you to note that according to a report from Daily Trust, 2 weeks ago, they met with two former heads of state, General Abdulsalami Abubakar and Ibrahim Babangida, and have planned to meet more stakeholders across the ethnic, religious, and political divides in the country.

From all indications, some stakeholders in the APC have expressed fear that the Muslim-Muslim ticket adopted by the party portends serious consequences for the unity of the country and even the party. According to a piece of reliable information gotten from Daily Trust, Chief Jackson Lekan Ojo, a chieftain of the APC in a telephone interview disclosed that there is an observable fear that the APC lose in the North. And if they lose, where are they going to get their votes from to retain the presidency?

As the campaign season is about to kick off very soon, there are indications that ethnicity and religion will play key roles in the emergence of who will succeed President Buhari and if this is anything to go by, the chances of the APC are slim because a core Fulani and Hausa man will not vote the APC. After all, Shettima is not their brother; he is a Kanuri man and they are the minority. More so, the Hausa/Fulani people are united. The game may favour Atiku Abubakar more who is from the Hausa/Fulani structure.
