[ad_1]

Environmental stakeholders have urged relevant government agencies to ensure the enforcement of environmental protection laws as part of measures to prevent air pollution.

This was part of the recommendations contained in a communique issued at an international conference on COVID-19, air quality, and environment was co-organized by the Center for Atmospheric Research and Penn State University and hosted by Osun State University, Osogbo.

The communique signed by the Director, Center for Atmospheric Research, Prof. Babatunde Rabiu and Dr. Olusegun Fawole, University of Portsmouth, obtained on Saturday, after the conference that was attended by stakeholders and representatives of various regulatory agencies, also called for promulgation and effective communication of environmental laws.

It further reads, “There is an urgent need for Nigeria to develop its Air Quality Index- this would enable relevant agencies, particularly the Manufacturer Association of Nigeria to independently monitor and control the emissions from their factories.

“The general public should become aware and conscious of the quality of air around them. As such, air quality reporting should become the order of the day as weather reports are.

“Government agencies should work in synergy and with relevant stakeholders to promulgate, effectively communicate, and enforce environmental protection laws.”
