Google Doodle Showcases Young Artists as It Announces Competition Winners
The annual Google Doodle contest is back, and with it comes a fresh batch of competition winners.
The competition, which has run in the U.S. since 2008, highlights some of the most creative and talented individuals, as the winners’ doodles are displayed on Google Doodle.
It is free to enter, and available to the majority of the public. Though Google Doodles may at times seem like random changes to the Google logo on the website, they usually celebrate a significant event or historical figure.
Design varies between Doodles but they usually incorporate the letters of the typical Google logo.
What Is the Google Doodle Competition?
Google Doodle is an annual art competition, available to all students from kindergarten to 12th grade.
If you are one of the winners of the competition you will have your artwork featured on Google.com and potentially win scholarships and packages for school.
According to Google Doodle, the competition “offers students K-12 an opportunity to display their own Doodle creativity on Google.com and win some awesome prizes while doing it!”
The prizes are as follows:
One National Winner
The national winner’s artwork will be displayed on Google.com for 24 hours. The winner will also get:
- A $30,000 college scholarship
- A $50,000 technology package for their school/non-profit organization
- Google hardware
- Fun Google merchandise
Four National Finalists
The are four national finalists, they will have their Doodles shown on the Doodle for Google gallery. Each national finalist will receive:
- A $5,000 college scholarship
- Google hardware
- Fun Google merchandise
54 State and Territory Winners
There are 54 state and territory winners, they will have their Doodles displayed on the Doodle for Google gallery, and will also get:
- Google hardware
- A congratulations message from Google
- Fun Google merchandise
Who Won the Google Doodle Competition 2022?
The national winner is 16-year-old Sophie Araque-Liu. Her artwork displays her embracing her mother, in line with this year’s theme of “I care for myself by…” You can see her artwork, along with the four national finalists’ designs here.
This year there were three judges, including:
- Selena Gomez – an artist, philanthropist and entrepreneur
- Elyse Fox – a mental health activist, director and model
- Juliana Urtubey – a teacher, named 2021’s national teacher of the year
How Can I Apply for the Next Google Doodle Competition?
This year’s contest is now closed. Google said those interested in taking part in the Doodle for Google 2023 competition should bookmark the Doodle for Google website for updates on the 2023 contest, which is set to open for submissions again this winter.
According to Google Doodle, “parents, teachers, nonprofits and after school programs are welcome to enter artwork on behalf of students K-12.
“When teachers and after-school programs enter Doodles on behalf of their students, the entry form must be signed by each student’s parent or guardian. Teachers can enter multiple Doodles at one time, but only one original Doodle per student. Regardless of the entry channel, the $50,000 technology award will go to the winning student’s school.”
As well as the U.S. competition, the Doodle for Google contest takes place in other countries throughout the year as well.
