Heightened Security Measures Mark Edo PDP Primary Election Kickoff

Edo State Prepares for Democratic Showdown Amidst Tight Security and Controversy

Security at the venue of the Edo State Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship primary election, the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin, has been significantly strengthened, with stringent measures implemented to ensure a smooth accreditation process.

On Thursday morning, stringent security protocols were enforced, with motorists barred from accessing the stadium road without thorough scrutiny by men of the Edo State Traffic Management Authority. Policing was intensified along the route, with additional officers stationed at the stadium entrance to regulate entry, permitting only individuals with legitimate business to proceed.

The heightened security measures come in the wake of recent political unrest during the All Progressives Congress primary election, prompting the Edo State Police Command to adopt a proactive stance towards maintaining peace and order. Speaking on behalf of the police, spokesman Chidi Nwabuzor emphasized the imperative of safeguarding the democratic process and protecting the welfare of party members, signaling a departure from viewing such elections solely as internal party affairs.

With ten aspirants contending for the PDP governorship ticket, including Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu and former chairman of Sterling Bank, Asue Ighodalo, tensions run high amidst allegations of bias in the delegate election process. Despite protests from nine aspirants, the primaries proceed as 563 delegates converge to nominate the party’s candidate for the upcoming gubernatorial election on September 21.

Amidst controversy and anticipation, accreditation commences at the Edo Hotel Marquee in the Government Reservation Area, Benin, setting the stage for a pivotal moment in the state’s political landscape.
