NAICOM, female insurers partner to drive growth

The Commissioner for Insurance, Mr Sunday Thomas, has urged the Professional Insurance Ladies Association to partner with it in ensuring insurance growth.

Thomas spoke during PILA’s 50th anniversary celebration, which was attended by chieftains in the financial sector and government officials in Lagos.

He said, “I want to invite the leadership of PILA to a continued partnership and synergy with the commission for the attainment of a vibrant and robust insurance sector as the commission has always and will at all time extend our full support to all stakeholders in the industry.

“The commission is open to new ideas and shall continue to introduce contemporary reforms and initiatives in line with international best practices.”

As the oldest female professional body in Nigeria, he urged them not to relent in encouraging women’s participation in insurance.

Thomas urged them to believe in a new dawn by nurturing transformative women leaders who would bring the industry into the technologically connected future, and a positive paradigm shift focused to meet the much-anticipated surge in the demand and untapped side.

The President, PILA, Margaret Moore, said the event signified a significant milestone in the journey of the association to empower and uplift women in insurance industry in Nigeria, by creating a platform for women to thrive, excel, and shape the future of the industry.

She said, “In commemoration of PILA’s 50thanniversary and in line with one of the tripod policies of National Insurance Commission namely to develop a tag team of actuarial capacity regime, my team set out to produce a well-researched insurance textbook which will be handy and useful to practitioners, insuring public and an invaluable gift to students during PILA’s annual career talk shows.”

Speaking on some of its landmarks, she said the idea of PILA Africa was mooted during the first international exchange programme in The Gambia in May 2013, during the tenure of past president, Olufemi Ogun with Past President, Jocelyn Ogbuokiri as education secretary.

PILA at 50, she said, wished to accommodate other women in insurance in Nigeria who were professionals in their own right.
