A grandmother, Fatimo Ganiyu is now in police custody for allegedly locking up three infants in the Ikotun area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the suspect was arrested on Wednesday at about 4:00 p.m.

A video sent to our correspondent by a resident in the area showed how malnourished the male and female infants were while making an agonising attempt to leave the house.

Speaking with PUNCH Metro on Thursday, a resident identified as Pelumi claimed that the children were locked up for days without food or water.

She said, “The children were abandoned for a while, and they were locked up without food or water for days. Some people claim it has been for months, while others say it has been for weeks.”

A police source from the division who pleaded anonymity, because he is not authorised to speak on the issue, told our correspondent that they got information the three children, consisting of two boys and a girl between the ages of two and four, were locked up by their grandmother at Agodo Egbe in Ikotun.

The source added that despite appearing malnourished, the infants were saved and brought to the station.

“At about 1600 hrs on April 17, 2024, information was received at the Ikotun Division that three children, a girl and two boys between the ages of two and four, were locked up by their grandmother, one Fatimo Ganiyu ‘f’ around Agodo Egbe Ikotun. The DPO immediately led a team of anti-crime detectives to the scene, and the children were rescued and taken to the station, although they looked malnourished and unhealthy.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident to our correspondent.

He added that the infants would receive the right care and attention, and the investigation was ongoing.

“The suspect was arrested, while the infants will be transferred for proper treatment and care. The investigation is ongoing.”
