Reps Demand Answers: Minister and NIMC DG Summoned Over National Identity Card Delay

House of Representatives Calls for Accountability Amidst Years of Frustration

The House of Representatives has taken action, summoning the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, as well as the Director-General of the National Identity Card Management Commission (NIMC), Mr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, to address the persistent delay in the release of National Identity Cards dating back to 2012.

During the plenary session in Abuja, a motion was brought forth by Muhammed Shehu, representing Bauchi State, highlighting the frustrations faced by Nigerians in obtaining their National Identity Cards despite the resources available for efficient production and electoral transparency. The motion was swiftly adopted, prompting the summoning of the minister and the NIMC DG.

Despite efforts to update information in NIMC’s database, citizens have encountered numerous obstacles, raising concerns about transparency and efficiency in the process. The House aims to uncover the reasons behind these delays and has tasked the Committees on Population and Anti-Corruption to investigate the matter thoroughly.

As the nation grapples with the implications of delayed identity card issuance, the House of Representatives seeks answers and pledges further legislative action based on the findings to ensure accountability and transparency in the process.
