The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene in the lingering strike by Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) to enable students to return to school.

Mr Usman Barambu, the newly elected NANS President, made the call at a news conference on Monday in Abuja.

Barambu described as worrisome the lingering dispute between ASUU and the Federal Government, which had lasted for about seven months.

He noted that the incessant strikes had affected the academic calendar of public-owned universities.

“Also, it has negatively impacted on the future of Nigerian students, as a programme of four years now would last for six years.”

Stakeholders and experts have stressed the need for adequate use of technology to improve teaching and boost learning outcomes across all tiers of education, including its primary schools in Lagos State.

Panelists and contributors made the remark at the second breakout session of the 2022 Lagos State Education Summit, themed: ‘Creating a sustainable Fit-For-Purpose Education Model,’ held in Lagos.

They stressed education as an integral part of every society and, like every social institution had witnessed changes over the years. Thus, to enable more innovative and engaging teaching methods and learning experiences, schools, including primary ones, are incorporating emerging technologies into the classroom.

5 Dead, 4 Rescued In Jigawa Boat Mishap

At least five persons have been confirmed dead in a boat accident at Martaba village of Gwaram LGA of Jigawa State.

A statement by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Jigawa State, DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, said four other persons were rescued.

Adam said a locally made canoe conveying nine passengers, who were returning home, capsized.

“Four of the passengers, one Barkeji, aged 60 years, and three others all of Martaba village were rescued alive.

“With the aid of divers, five corpses were recovered.

Prolonged ASUU strike Forces UNICAL Lecturer Into Driving Cab

A senior lecturer at the University of Calabar (names withheld) who, like many of his colleagues, is affected by the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has resorted to driving taxi.

The strike started in February 2022 and negotiations between both the Federal Government and the ASUU have several times been deadlocked.

The senior lecturer said he had to resort to driving Bolt cab in order to escape hard times, feed his family and meet other obligations.

He does not want his name disclosed to DAILY POST, but he is the head of a renowned department in the University of Calabar.

A former President of Post Graduate Students in UNICAL and a former lecturer, Dr Anthony Bissong Attah was shocked to encounter him yesterday when he called a Bolt cab to pick him to a destination.

“I had a very emotional experience today. I ordered a Bolt cab this morning to catch up with an engagement somewhere in Calabar.
