The federal government said it could not agree to a percentage pay rise for university academic staff unions, which it would not be able to do. Education Minister Adamu Adamu on Tuesday said the government could only afford a 23.5% increase in lecturers’ salaries and a 35% increase in professors’ salaries.

The minister also noted that President Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retired) had warned against signing an agreement that the government would not be able to respect.

Adamu disclosed this when he spoke during a meeting with Vice Presidents and other stakeholders in the university system.

“The federal government can only increase the salaries by 23.5% for all categories of the workforce in the federal universities except the professorial cadre, who will get a 35% upward review.”

From now on, allowances relating to ad hoc duties of university and non-university staff will be paid in a timely manner by the Governing Council of the university where the service is rendered and by the staff performing them.

That the amount of 150 billion Naira be available in the 2023 budget as resources for the revitalization of federal universities to be disbursed to the institutions in the first quarter of the year and that the amount of 50 billion Naira be available in the 2023 budget for the payment of the pending areas of the academic grants received, which must be paid in the first quarter of the year.
