Atiku Claims To Be A Unifier Yet Southeast PDP Is Fighting For Inclusion – PDP Chieftain, Ononuju

Amid the ongoing crisis rocking the nation’s topmost political platform, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), former vice-president Atiku Abubakar has been tackled by one of the party’s southern chieftains, Mr. Katch Ononuju.

Speaking during an interview on CHANNELS TELEVISION’s ‘Sunrise Daily’ on Thursday, Mr. Ononuju dismissed claims that the crisis within the PDP was based on a personal issue between Rivers Governor, Nyesom Wike, and some persons in the PDP, insisting that it was rather an issue between the north and southern caucuses of the party.

Going further, Mr. Ononuju accused the northern caucus of sidelining its southern counterpart by refusing to keep to the initial agreement that the PDP’s national chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu would resign if another northerner clinched the party’s presidential ticket. Quite interestingly, the chieftain blamed Atiku Abubakar for failing to act as the ‘Unifier’ he claims to be by not ensuring the inclusion of the PDP’s southern bloc in the party’s leadership structure.

“First of all, there is no Rivers governor’s camp. There is a northern caucus and a southern caucus. The argument primarily by the southern caucus is that they want to be included. This is an issue of inclusion. Are you aware that yesterday, the NWC (National Working Committee) meeting could not hold because the members of the southern caucus in the NWC walked out because they could not tolerate Mr. Ayu continuing to sit over meetings? The South wants him to step down as he promised he would step down when a northerner emerges as a candidate, and that has finally happened.

We (the south) want party chairmanship and that is what it is. If the north takes the presidential candidate as agreed, then let the chairmanship of the party come to the south. That is all we are asking for and it is not too much for anybody to understand. It also behooves Atiku now to show. You cannot call yourself a unifier and you are not able to act on this kind of issue on inclusion,” he said.
