In a decisive move, the Benue State Security Council has issued a stern 14-day ultimatum to herders flouting the state’s anti-open grazing legislation.

Under the state’s Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Law (2017), herders are required to cease grazing their livestock outside designated ranches. Emphasizing the law’s continued validity, the council has unequivocally warned violators of impending consequences.

Chief Press Secretary to Benue Governor, Sir Tersoo Kula, disclosed that a dedicated seven-man committee has been established to oversee the enforcement of the ultimatum, effective from Wednesday, February 21st, 2024.

Addressing the influx of herders and open grazing within the state, Kula urged immediate compliance, urging those responsible for inviting them to desist promptly. As tensions mount, Benue asserts its commitment to upholding the rule of law and safeguarding its communities.
