Nigerian Fuel Tanker Drivers Halt Strike Amid Economic Concerns

NARTO suspends nationwide strike following talks with government and stakeholders

The Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) has put on hold its planned nationwide strike, signaling a potential relief in the country’s fuel supply concerns. Following extensive discussions with the Federal Government and key players in the petroleum industry on Monday, the association decided to suspend its operations protest, citing grave economic challenges.

In a letter dated February 15 and directed to the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), NARTO highlighted the crippling effect of the nation’s economic downturn on its members, stressing their inability to sustain operations. Central to their grievances was the exorbitant cost of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), commonly known as diesel, which has exacerbated their financial strain.

Yusuf Lawal, the President of NARTO, affirmed the suspension of the strike in a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja, expressing the association’s commitment to resuming operations promptly following fruitful discussions with the federal government. This development comes as a glimmer of hope for Nigerians grappling with the ripple effects of the country’s economic woes.
