NLC Stands Firm: Nationwide Strike Unstoppable Despite SSS Warnings

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has firmly rejected the plea from the State Security Service (SSS) to halt its impending nationwide strike, affirming its determination to proceed with the planned protests against the country’s economic challenges.
Scheduled for February 27 and 28, the nationwide demonstrations aim to address the dire economic situation gripping the nation, exacerbated by unmet government assurances following a 14-day ultimatum issued by the labour union.
In response to the SSS spokesperson, Peter Afunanya’s call for dialogue over discord, NLC President, Joe Ajaero, affirmed the union’s resolve to push forward with the strike, questioning the absence of arrests for those allegedly plotting to disrupt the protests.
Ajaero emphasized the peaceful nature of the demonstrations, expressing concern over the SSS’s portrayal of the protests as potentially violent. He underscored the NLC’s commitment to the country’s sovereignty and security while asserting the necessity of addressing the soaring cost of living, which affects both citizens and SSS personnel.
“We cannot fold our hands and pretend all is well. That will be a grievous conspiracy that history will not forgive,” Ajaero asserted, highlighting the union’s dedication to effecting positive change in the face of mounting economic hardships.
