According to her, the man in question takes her out not minding her condition, much to the bewilderment and amazement of people around.

Chilaka Adaugo is a 22-year old undergraduate student of the University of Port Harcourt. The Imo State lady is currently in her final year as a Philosophy student and as such is looking forward to her graduation after the current industrial action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is suspended.

During an interview, Cindy, as she is fondly called by her friends, discussed her childhood, how she lost one of her legs in an accident, how she deals with discrimination because of her disability and finally, her love life.

Cindy recounted how she lost one of her legs. According to her, she was involved in an accident with her dad when she was in primary 6. The commercial motorbike which she boarded with her dad on her way from school was hit by a car. They were quickly rushed to a nearby hospital. The incident happened in 2010.

After initial examinations and treatments, they were both refereed to the Federal Medical Center, Owerri for further treatments. Owing to the extent of her injuries, the doctors told her that she could only survive if the the affected leg is amputated. Her parents had to agree and so she became the lady with one leg.

Her life never remained the same after her leg was amputated. She faced several challenges while in primary and secondary schools. However, her parents were very supportive so also were some friends and few staff.

When asked if she was in any relationship, she confidently replied in the affirmative. According to her, the man in her life is loving and caring who cares less about her disability. They go to outings together much to admiration and amazement of people.

“Yes, I have a boyfriend and he has been lovely and good to me; he takes me out too, not minding my situation or how I look. In fact, whenever we go out, people are always staring at us and commending him for not feeling ashamed to be with me. People are always telling me he likes me”, she remarked.

Cindy’s story should serve as an inspiration for those who felt being disabled was a curse.
