Why I Stopped Chasing Out Female Students Who Wear Trousers To My Class When I Was A Lecturer-Dalung

A former Minister of Sport and Youth Development, Solomon Dalung had an interview with Symfoni TV where he spoke about the lingering strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the need for universities to be adequately funded.

Dalung disclosed that before diving into politics, he used to be a lecturer. He said as a lecturer, he would always chase out female students who would wear jeans (trousers) to his class until he had an encounter with a certain female student who explained that she did not like wearing skirts to his class because she often sits on a platform facing male students.

About 11:40 minutes into a video (link provided above) shared on YouTube, Dalung said “I was a university lecturer before I joined politics. When I was lecturing, my classroom used to have about 350 students instead of 114, so the over 200+ students will hang on the windows, and some sit on bricks.

“I used to dislike female students who would wear jeans and come to my class, I used to send them out. One day I caught one wearing trousers and I wanted to send her out but she begged to explain her reason for wearing jeans.

“She said she often sits on a platform facing male students and wearing skirts would inconvenience her and make her feel very uncomfortable. From that day I changed my mind and began to allow them to wear jeans to class”.

He added that the issue of overpopulation in class is one of the many issues ASUU is trying to address. He said ASUU is not just concerned about the welfare of university lecturers alone and it wants the FG to fund education properly and build infrastructure to accommodate the rising number of students
