ASUU Strike: FG Announces 23.5% Salary Increment For Lecturers

Education Minister Adamu Adamu said on Tuesday that the government would only be able to pay a 23.5% increase in teachers’ salaries, while professors would have had a 35% increase.

The minister also noted that President Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd) has warned against signing agreements that the government will not be able to fulfill.

Adamu spoke about this during a meeting with vice chancellors and other stakeholders in the university system.

He said, “The government can only raise salaries by 23.5% for all types of employees at federal universities. except for the professional aide, who gets a 35% hike.

“Henceforth, the allowances relating to the temporary functions of the academic and non-academic personnel will be paid in due course by the boards of trustees of the universities to which these services are provided and the personnel who execute them.”

“That the sum of 150 billion Naira be set aside in the 2023 budget as funds for the rehabilitation of federal universities to be disbursed to the institutions in the first quarter of the year and that the sum of 50 One thousand. The 2023 budget envisages one million Naira for the disbursement of outstanding areas of acquired academic scholarships to be disbursed in during the first quarter of the year”.

Speaking at the end of the meeting, the Pro-Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria, Prof. Peter Okebukola, said the government was fully prepared to secure the return of university professors to school.
