In a tragic turn of events, Olabode Olawuyi, a long-serving Veterinary Technologist at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile-Ife Zoological Park, was fatally attacked by a nine-year-old lion while tending to the animals.
The university’s spokesperson, Abiodun Olarewaju, confirmed that Olawuyi, who had cared for the lions since their birth nine years ago, fell victim to the male lion he had nurtured.
Despite efforts by fellow staff members to rescue Olawuyi, the lion’s attack proved fatal, leaving the university community in shock and sorrow.
Upon receiving the distressing news, Vice-Chancellor Professor Adebayo Simeon BAMIRE, was briefed on the futile attempts to save Olawuyi’s life by the university’s medical team.
In response to the tragedy, the university took the difficult decision to euthanize the aggressive lion. A delegation was dispatched to offer condolences and support to the deceased’s family.
The university management has initiated a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances leading to the incident, aiming to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
