LP National Chairman Freed, Edo Chair Detained by Police

Turbulence within Labour Party as Arrests and Releases Rock Leadership Amid Allegations

In a whirlwind of events, the Labour Party’s national chairman, Barr. Julius Abure, found himself at the center of a police arrest that sent shockwaves through the political landscape. The saga unfolded as policemen from Zone 5 Headquarters in Benin City, Edo State, detained Abure alongside the Edo State chairman of the party, Kelly Ogbaloi, and three others on Wednesday evening.

However, amidst mounting pressure, Abure was released from detention in the early hours of Thursday morning, around 3.05 am. The release came after the Assistant Inspector General (AIG) in charge of the zonal headquarters, Mr. Arungwa Nwazule, disclosed that the arrests were made on allegations ranging from conspiracy to armed robbery.

Addressing his supporters and party faithful upon his release, Abure likened his ordeal to that of freedom fighters worldwide, emphasizing that his release was the result of pressure from unspecified quarters. He further revealed assurances that the detained Edo State party chairman, publicity secretary, and other LP members would also be released later on Thursday.

In a defiant tone, Abure criticized the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing them of exacerbating the challenges faced by Nigerians. He attributed the turmoil within the LP to relentless efforts by detractors, citing numerous petitions and frivolous accusations against him since the February 25, 2023 general election.

Despite the upheaval, Abure remained resolute in his commitment to the Labour Party’s goals, affirming that neither he nor the party would be deterred by the obstacles encountered along the way.
