Man in custody for trafficking 1,040 illicit drugs

A 43-year-old man simply identified as Obiefule Nwagha is now in custody for allegedly conveying 1,040 tons of Indian hemp at the Ilufe waterside jetty at the Alaba International Market, Ojo, in Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the incident occurred on April 17 at about 4:30 p.m.

A police source from the division who pleaded anonymity because he is not authorised to speak on the issue told our correspondent that detectives from the Tactical Squad, Ijaniki, trailed a white Mercedes Benz mini-truck to the Ilufe Waterside Jetty where it was discovered that a flying boat was offloading a sizable amount of substances suspected to be Indian hemp.

“On April 17, 2024, at about 0430 hours, while on an early morning patrol around Ajangbadi, detectives of Tactical Squad, Ijaniki trailed one white Mercedes Benz mini truck to Ilufe Waterside Jetty, Alaba International Ojo, where it was discovered that a large quantity of substance suspected to be Indian hemp in sacks was being offloaded from a flying boat at the waterside jetty, Alaba International. One Obiefule Nwagha, aged 43, was arrested at the waterside jetty.

The source added that 13 sacks with a total of 1,040 wraps of substance suspected to be Indian hemp were found, adding that the driver of the white Mercedes Benz mini-truck claimed that he was sent by one Ifeanyi to transport the substances from Alaba International Market Ojo to Waterside Jetty Alaba.

The source added, “He was alleged to be the driver of the white Mercedes Benz mini-truck, and a total of 1,040 wraps of substances suspected to be Indian hemp in 13 sacks were recovered. The suspect alleged that one Ifeanyi ‘m’’ contacted him to convey the substance from Waterside Jetty Alaba to Alaba International Market Ojo.”

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hudeyin, confirmed the incident to our correspondent.

He added that the investigation was ongoing and efforts were being made to arrest Ifeanyi.

He said. “The investigation is ongoing, and effort is on to track and arrest the said Ifeanyi.”

PUNCH Metro had reported that operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency intercepted large consignmentsBenjamin Hudeyin of Ghanaian Loud smuggled into Lagos in two trucks and a J5 bus with a total weight of 14,524.8 kilograms.
