Over 100 countries participating in world pharmacy conference

The President of the International Pharmaceutical Federation, Dr. Dominique Jordan has said that over a hundred countries are participating in the 80th FIP World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, ongoing in Seville, Spain.

The conference is scheduled to hold in Seville, Spain, from 18 to 22, September.

According to a statement issued by the FIP and made available to PUNCH HealthWise, Dr. Jordan disclosed this while speaking with the press at the FIBES centre in Seville on Tuesday, noting that the conference will help raise awareness of the importance of all three main domains of pharmacy — education, science and practice — and help ensure pharmacy’s contribution to universal health coverage.

“Pharmacy is vital in strengthening our health systems, hence our congress theme: Pharmacy united in the recovering of health care. Experiences related to advancing roles must be shared so that countries can learn from each other,” he said.

In addition, Mr. Jordan said that pharmacy must take its rightful place in the healthcare system, positioning itself as central to primary health care and equipping itself to deliver the services needed, particularly in the fields of mental health and vaccinating children.

He cited recent evidence that depression and anxiety increased by 25% in the first year of the COVID pandemic, and data released in July showing that global vaccination coverage declined in 2021, with 25 million infants missing out on lifesaving vaccines.

“This congress will support our profession to make a difference, with sessions on mental health, vaccination and vaccine technologies, among the topics,” he said. “During these few days, we will discuss learnings for future preparedness, we will hear about the evidence supporting the response to COVID-19 and from experts on a range of topics including new medicines, improving communication and addressing misinformation, and strategies to support whole-person healthcare.

“We will share ethical challenges and explore solutions to health inequities, medicines shortages, choices and affordability, sustainability, and technological advances.”
