Revealed: Why Tuchel Wanted Aubameyang to Join Chelsea this season

[ad_1]

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is reunited with his former Borussia Dortmund manager Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea.

The Blues were keen to sign a striker before the summer transfer window and although they failed to sign Rafael Leão, for whom they made several bids, it always looked as if they would bring Aubameyang from Barcelona.

The deal was not officially announced until long after the window had closed, but the Gabon international, long employed by Chelsea rivals Arsenal, was signed in good time.

Aubameyang was unable to feature for the Blues in Saturday’s London derby against West Ham, but although Kai Havertz scored the winning goal in that match, it seems that the new boy, when available after the facial injury he sustained during a break-in at his home while in Spain, will pose a greater threat to the team from Stamford Bridge.

Tuchel spoke after the game and revealed that it was the 33-year-old’s consistency that attracted him.

“You know what you get with Auba and he was very happy to be back in the Premier League. He knows how to score goals,” he said.

Xavi on Aubameyang:

Barcelona manager Xavi meanwhile explained that he is sad to see a player like Aubameyang leave the club.

“I’m sad, because he helped us a lot,” Xavi said. “He was an example both on and off the pitch.

“He made a big difference – look at his numbers. As a person he is a gem and he always trains with a smile on his face.

“It’s a shame because you want players like that in your team, but it was a great opportunity for him and for the club.

“We had to put the pieces of the puzzle together and I think we’re all happy in the end.”

Aubameyang really came into his own at Barcelona, scoring 13 goals in 23 games, and Tuchel is hoping for a similar development at Chelsea.
