Strike Affecting Students’ Mental Health – Benue Varsity VC

[ad_1]

The Vice Chancellor of Benue State University (BSU), Makurdi, Prof. Joe Iorapuu, has said that the six months old ongoing strike embarked on by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) across the country is already affecting the mental health of students.

Iorapuu made the remark while answering questions from some journalists in Makurdi on Thursday about the fate of undergraduates following the prolonged ASUU strike.

He added that the strike-breaking instructors must broaden their thinking by shelving their action because the students have been staying at home for so long that they are suffering psychological effects.

“Whether the strike will have an impact on students, it has already had a mental impact. There is a fresh dialogue around mental health, and it has already had an impact on the students. Due to all of these, my daughter, who should have graduated about a year ago, is still enrolled at the University of Jos. There are two of them; the one in the 100-level position ought to be in the 300-level position right now.

You can see that we are also affected by these, because (strike). That our kids are victims hurts me. We are also victims, and society doesn’t always comprehend. That’s why I’m suggesting that we (colleagues) take a seat and reconsider,” he remarked.

In order to permanently cease strikes in the educational sector, the vice chancellor emphasized the necessity for the federal and state governments to take education seriously while making plans for the nation.
